Grab Bag: MIB: 3 budget; SCENES FROM THE SUBURBS for free; trailer for ONE DAY
While every production has its issues, it appears as though MEN IN BLACK 3 is having more than most.
After starting production last year, without a completed script remember, the film has hit the skids, with a cavalcade of writers jumping aboard to take on rewrites of that very incomplete piece of writing. Well, according to The Wrap, the finances may have caught up with Sony.
The outlet is reporting that the film’s budget now clocks in at $215 million, and that is with New York’s generous tax rebates taken into account. The film is double the budget of MEN IN BLACK 2, and this is all before promotional costs are taken into account, meaning that this sucker needs to make some serious cash to rope this insanity in. Personally, while I’m not a huge fan of the franchise, I do find Will Smith quite charming in these films. That said, even his huge star name likely won’t be able to bandage this insane fiscal bleeding.
In other news, MUBI will be hosting the world premiere of Spike Jonze’s short film, SCENES FROM THE SUBURBS. Inspired by the Arcade Fire album of the same name, users of the social networking site can stream the film for 48 hours starting on June 27 I saw the film at SXSW this year, and fell absolutely in love with its melancholic nature and its stunning teen performers. All in all, it’s an absolute must watch.
Finally, a new trailer for the Lone Scherfig film, ONE DAY, has hit. The film stars Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, and looks to be an intriguing take on the romance genre, with a lot of hype surrounding it, particularly since it was given an opportune release date of August 19. Enjoy!
