It’s not rare for a massively popular musical to make its way to the silver screen. However, this one is a tad bit different.

Based off of their much beloved album, Green Day’s American Idiot has become an equally hyped Broadway musical, and now, according to THR, will become a rather compelling-sounding little feature film.

The outlet is reporting that Michael Mayer will direct the upcoming film for Universal, and that, and this is the kicker, writer Dustin Lance Black is currently in talks to pen the film’s script. An Oscar winner for MILK, Black will likely be in the Oscar race this year for his J. EDGAR script, currently being shot by Clint Eastwood.

As far as the narrative goes, it’s a story best described as following three characters: Jesus Of Suburbia, St. Jimmy, and Whatsername, and looks at “the ideas of love vs. rage.” Personally, while I’ve never seen the musical, I was actually a fan of the album when it hit, so mix that with Black as the writer, and I can’t wait for this thing.

I thought the screenshot was from Rent at first. The set design is strikingly similar.
