Greg Motolla talks Paul.
I really envy Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. The two are great friends and are constantly cast together in films for their near-perfect onscreen chemistry…that just seems like a pretty awesome life. Anyway, a few months ago we learned that Pegg and Frost had a film named PAUL in the works, but little else was known. Adam revealed the plot summary back in November, but this week, director Greg Motolla revealed a little additional info on the film’s mostly CGI central character.
“That movie is a far more technically challenging movie than Adventureland was because one of the main characters is a fully non-existent creature. He’s basically an alien who may be, let’s say, 70% CGI and the big challenge is that he needs to be a very funny, comedic method actor. It’s not the kind of CGI character where we people to say ‘Oh wow, look what they did, that’s so cool’ it’s actually the kind of CGI character where we want people to just treat like another actor in the film, and he should be fully believable and multi-faceted and has to give a great performance, he just doesn’t exist. We’ve been doing a lot of test trying to figure out how to pull that one off….It’s rare that an R-rated comedy
would have a CGI Creature right at the center of it so I’m learning quite a bit.”
So to recap, Simon Pegg and Nick Frost wrote this film which is essentially about two British geeks roadtripping through America who try to help an alien find his way home. Pegg and Frost will play the geeks, but no word has come down about who will provide Paul’s personality. Greg Motolla, who is fast becoming a comedy badass, will be providing the direction, and seems to have a pretty good idea as to where he’s going with this. In summary, this film should rule.
