The live-action version of the classic action anime epic Akira has been in development for years, with many directors and actors circling the project, from James Cameron to Leonardo DiCaprio. DiCaprio is still on board as a producer and Albert Hughes, of the infamous Hughes Brothers (DEAD PRESIDENTS, BOOK OF ELI), is set to direct.

Steve Kloves, the Oscar nominated screenwriter who has adapted every Harry Potter novel sans ORDER OF THE PHOENIX, has just been hired to transform Katsuhiro Otomo's graphic novel set in a post-apocalyptic Japan. The cyber-punk manga is a benchmark in the world of comics, and anyone that's read it should be very excited this project is finally gaining some momentum.

Once this film gets rolling, it should be one of the most anticipated films in recent memory. As of now, however, no cast and no release date has been set.
