Harvey Weistein to re-cut THE KING’S SPEECH for a PG-13 rating?

Apparently, with 12 newly announced Oscar nominations, Harvey Weinstein is set to finally bring his golden goose, THE KING’S SPEECH, down to a PG-13 rating.

The LA Times is reporting that Weinstein is set to re-cut the beloved Tom Hooper-directed film, from an R-rating, to the ever popular PG-13.  With huge box office gains coming in from the UK, where the film’s 12-and-over rating has boosted it extremely, a cut has not only been long talked about, but one that now looks likely.

“The British numbers are huge because the rating lets families see the movie together. Tom and I are trying to find a unique way to do this that keeps his vision of the movie.”

Now, while this sounds like a great idea for a film that really is already massively family friendly, there is quite a big problem with this possible edit, and it’s not something that could be truly fixed.

Personally, the primary scene in question, which has no nudity but a cavalcade of swearing that would make the hardest of truck drivers blush like a 14 year old girl, is quite important to the narrative.  Our lead, played by Colin Firth, discovers that, and kind-of-spoilers ahead, he is able to speak when he is yelling or cursing at someone.  Therefore, if this scene is either cut, or maybe dubbed over, I think it could lose a lot of its steam.

However, the film won’t hit in its edited format until after the Oscars, so we won’t be worrying about this for some time.

It sounds like they’re more concerned about the UK rating than the US one. Can adults in the UK not take their children to see whatever their equivalent of an R movie is? I don’t know how it is over there.

Here, parents can (and should!) just take their children. The whole point of the scene is that they’re bad words. It’s a teachable moment! :)
