With his REAL STEEL director, Shawn Levy, attached to helm the long talked-about remake of the classic 1966 sci-fi film, FANTASTIC VOYAGE, Hugh Jackman appears as though he may be interested in getting involved.

Deadline is reporting that Jackman is Levy’s “first choice” to star in the film, which follows a group of scientists who enter the body of a fellow scientist to save him. A 3D feature, the film is penned by Shane Salerno, with re-writes by Laeta Kalogridis (SHUTTER ISLAND), and has been much talked about since its inception.

Produced by James Cameron, the film was originally slated to be helmed by Paul Greengrass, the film then fell into the hands of Levy, who is becoming one of the more popular names amongst Hollywood big wigs. This is also interesting to note, particularly given the fact that this film will likely shoot in the slot left open in Jackman’s schedule by THE WOLVERINE, which appears all but dead at this point, following Darren Aronofsky’s departure from the film.

Personally, I’m actually quite interested this project. I think it’s a film that really could use an update, and the team of Levy and Jackman could make it relatively intriguing. That said, it really depends on the result of REAL STEEL. If that film ultimately fails, then this film is definitely in jeopardy.
