I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS finds more trouble; release date delayed again
I just finished writing up an article about MGM's financial woes and its effects on the film industry. Looks like more news is coming out about another film, which also serves as a great example for the trouble facing the movie industry. I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS, the comedy starring Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor, has hit yet another snag in its long road to release.
Check out all the details, after the break.
The film, I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS, follows the real life character of Steven Jay Russell, a con-artist portrayed by Jim Carrey. Due to his chosen life of crime, Russell ends up in prison. He falls in love with his cell mate, portrayed by Ewan McGregor, and naturally, hilarity ensues.
The film debuted at Sundance back in 2009, finding moderate success with decent reviews, but has been stuck in distribution hell. The film was originally scheduled for an April 30, 2010 release date but was pushed back to a July 30 date due to shaky confidence in its distributor. Now, legal troubles have stalled its release yet again.
I won't bore you with the jargon of entertainment jurisprudence. Rather, you probably care what this means for a fairly well regarded indie movie. It could mean that the film will hit its updated October 2010 release date. It could also mean that the film will be delayed yet again for a 2011 release. However, I've got my money on a direct-to-DVD release. It seems like the best financial option for the movie now, as buzz from Sundance has all but disappeared.
What are your thoughts? Anticipating this movie?
