Ice Cube signs on for 21 JUMP STREET and is shopping CHROME AND PAINT
Ice Cube is negotiating to star opposite Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in 21 JUMP STREET, according to Deadline. He’s currently shopping a new drama he wrote called CHROME AND PAINT. The film reported to be simiar to BOYZ N THE HOOD is being set up as a starring/directing vehicle focusing on custom car culture of South Central Los Angeles.
Phil Lord and Chris Millier are helming Cube in JUMP STREET where he is set to star as the precinct captain. This is the role that was originated by Steven Williams in the TV series. Shooting begins in late April and Neal Moritz is producing. I am personally not too excited to see this film. I may reconsider if Johnny Depp gets a cameo, but until then I do not have high hopes.
In 2010, Cube directed the Oakland Raiders documentary for ESPN called STRAIGHT OUTTA L.A. and before that directed1998′s THE PLAYERS CLUB, which he also wrote. CHROME AND PAINT will take audiences into the world of pimped-out high end cars and will be a drama dealing with the temptation to place materialism above all else. Cube hopes to have the project set up at a studio within the next two weeks and to begin filming in late summer. He’s producing the project with Cube Vision partner Matt Alvarez.
Cube and Alvarez have two other projects in the works at New Line. First up is the R-rated DIRTY HARRY type drama, which Cube and David O Russell are close to hiring a writer. This will be the first time the director and star have worked together since THREE KINGS. Cube Vision is also producing the NWA biopic, STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON to be scripted by Andrea Berloff (WORLD TRADE CENTER).
I grew up listening to NWA and am excited for STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON. CHROME AND PAINT and the drama with Russell sound like promising projects as well.
