Idris Elba is wanted for Guillermo del Toro's PACIFIC RIM

Turn the clock back a few weeks. Actor Idris Elba took to the web, Twitter to be exact, and announced that he was set to go on “one of the biggest meetings” of his career. Most people had jumped to the conclusion that it was with none-other-than director Quentin Tarantino for his upcoming film, DJANGO UNCHAINED. However, that may not be the case in fact.

Deadline is reporting that Elba has signed on to star in Guillermo Del Toro’s next film, PACIFIC RIM. The role in question here was originally tapped for Tom Cruise, which is interesting, as it was originally thought he’d take the role of Stacker Pentecost, described as a “black Briton.” However, while the role in particular hasn’t been revealed, many believe that he’ll play Raleigh Antrobos, a co-pilot of the film’s robots, Jaegers, who fight off the film’s baddies.

Elba leads the film which also features Charlie Hunnam and Charlie Day, all with their sights set on shooting this later in 2011.

While I would have been interested to see what Cruise could do in a Del Toro-helmed picture, Elba is a much more intriguing name. He’s a fantastic actor, and should do wonderfully under the guidance of an equally gifted filmmaker in Del Toro. Talk about amping up the excitement.
