IMDb rates the top 15 films of the New Millennium

Though I do not often make my own top ten (or 15, or whatever) lists, I love looking them over (and debating them!). IMDb has got an interesting one out today - the Top Rated Films of the New Millennium. One of the best things IMDb does (and there are tons) is aggregate its ten star rating system into all sorts of different Top lists, which are usually really fun to peruse, especially when a big new film hits and shakes things up. Shock - THE DARK KNIGHT is number one.

This list is based on user ratings for the top 15 films made from the year 2000 and on. What do you think? Anything grievously missing? Any surprise over THE DARK KNIGHT's prevalence? Take a look at the list after the jump, and tell me all your thoughts in the comments!

1. THE DARK KNIGHT (2008)

2. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (2003)

3. CITY OF GOD (2002)

4. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING (2001)

5. UP (2009)

6. MEMENTO (2000)

7. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS (2002)

8. WALL-E (2008)

9. AMELIE (2001)

10. THE DEPARTED (2006)

11. THE LIVES OF OTHERS (2006)

12. THE PIANIST (2002)

13. SPIRITED AWAY (2001)

14. ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (2004)

15. REQUIEM FOR A DREAM (2000)

About Kate Erbland

At age five, Kate was famous in her first grade class for having seen DIRTY DANCING twelve times (a distinction which was only overshadowed by her other infamous trait of constantly running around with her skirt over her head). While her tastes have turned considerably more refined in the intervening twenty years, Kate still carries a serious torch for dance movies (and for skirt-head). She’s seen every James Bond movie in theaters since 1985 (A VIEW TO A KILL), has never walked out of or passed out during a film (CLOVERFIELD), truly believes movie theater popcorn should be its very own food group, and once told David Gordon Green, “you’re my very favorite director in the whole wide world.” Kate came to Los Angeles for the weather and a writing program at Loyola Marymount University that allowed her to spend weeks on the road, pretending to be Kerouac while drinking a lot of cheap wine. She has stayed in Los Angeles because she can’t imagine living anywhere that doesn’t allow her to tell people, “Tara Reid and I go to the same grocery store.” In her free time, Kate enjoys talking about all things important to various species of the living (including, but not limited to, people, hairless cats, and police ponies), the local Los Angeles music scene, hiking, and telling people to see more movies and read more books.

good movies, maybe i wouldn't put them in the same order. UP is also a surprise since it's really recent.

I've seen almost all of these… I have very little work to do to finish out the list. There are very few top 10/15 lists that I can claim that about.

I have seen all of these with the exception of “Spirited Away”, which I've been meaning to see. This list is not so much of a top movie list as it is a top fairly mainstream movie list.

Oh I forgot to add that out of these movies, City of God, Memento, Eternal Sunshine, and Requiem for a Dream would be in my top 15 movie list.

Well, it is, specifically, the top rated moves on IMDB, which means they are the movies that the general movie going public has liked, so yeah, they're going to be mainstream… With that thought in mind, there were some movies that I found surprising to be on here (Requiem for a Dream – definitely not mainstream).

Memento is definitely one of my favorite movies of all time. Requiem for a Dream is what I call “the best movie I will never see again.”

And see Spirited Away, it's fantastic.
