INCEPTION getting 3D conversion?
Sometimes I feel that 3D is going to be the death of true quality film. It's starting to show up in every genre, and many people, including Christopher Nolan himself, feel it's considered downplaying 3D when films are now labeled "2D." In his words he said:
“On an experiential level, I find the dimness of the image extremely alienating...the truth is, I think it’s a misnomer to call it 3D versus 2D. The whole point of cinematic imagery is it’s three dimensional…You know 95% of our depth cues come from occlusion, resolution, color and so forth, so the idea of calling a 2D movie a ‘2D movie’ is a little misleading.”
So with Nolan feeling this way, what's this about INCEPTION possibly be getting a 3D post conversion?
Director Jonathan Liebesman was doing press for BATTLE: LOS ANGELES and casually mentioned the the CLASH OF THE TITANS sequel was not only getting a 3D post conversion, but so were others:
“I didn’t want to convert, but Warner Brothers showed me how far conversion’s come...You’ve got Christopher Nolan doing INCEPTION converting the DVD, you’ve got HARRY POTTER being converted, STAR WARS being converted, so the conversion process has improved dramatically in the past two years.”
That was a big "leak." Granted, this is word of mouth and not necessarily official, but there has been other information surrounding a 3D INCEPTION. A little while back Christopher Nolan said that he did some 3D conversion on INCEPTION but it wasn't up to his impeccable standards:
“I’m not a huge fan of 3D...We did tests on INCEPTION to look at the post conversion process, and they worked very well. It’s quite easy to do, in fact. But it takes a little time, and we didn’t have the time to do it to the standard that I would have been happy.”
I'm all for making sure a gorgeous film such as INCEPTION that has the possibility of making this conversion is done right, so I stand behind Nolan on that one. But as mentioned before, this isn't exactly 100% happening, so be prepared for a retraction on someone's part.
