While it may be Oscar weekend, another awards show has come in and stolen quite a bit of its thunder.

As per usual, Oscar Sunday is preceded by the announcement of the yearly Independent Spirit Awards, and 2011’s awards have finally been revealed, meeting with quite a bit of praise.

The big winner here is Darren Aronofsky’s BLACK SWAN, which nabbed Best Picture, Best Director, Best Female Lead, and Best Cinematography, all four justly deserved. This season’s biggest film, THE KING’S SPEECH, was given quite a bit of respect here as well, picking up Best Foreign Film. WINTER’S BONE also got a fair bit of love here, picking up both Best Supporting Male and Best Supporting Female for John Hawkes and Dale Dickey respectively.

Rounding out the big award winners were James Franco for Best Male Lead for 127 HOURS, EXIT THROUGH THE GIFT SHOP for Best Documentary, and my favorite nod of the night, Best First Screenplay which ended up going to the fantastic TINY FURNITURE. It’s one of 2010’s best films, and it’s nice to see it get some love here. Check out the full list of winners after the break!
