Lone Scherfig’s ONE DAY follows Emma (Anne Hathaway) and Dex (Jim Sturgess) over the course of twenty years, revisiting the two each year on the anniversary of their first night together. Deriving from the best-selling David Nicholls novel of the same name, there’s a hefty amount of anticipation for it, even when discounting its exceptional director and terrific cast. The first trailer, though, didn’t sit well with some.

Thankfully, this second trailer, an international one that can be seen after the break, is a bit of an improvement.

The novel is a gorgeous, beautiful ode to the trials, difficulties, and love found in life, but it never comes across as sappy or melodramatic. In fact, some portions of the novel are fairly dark and grim. From what is seen in the two trailers, though, ONE DAY will be a frothy, feel-good drama with little emotional depth. Hopefully that’s just a marketing ploy to convince moviegoers to catch the film at their closest cinema, as Scherfig and her cast are more than capable of bringing this wondrous story to life.

ONE DAY arrives in U.S. theaters on August 19.
