Is a sequel to THE PROFESSIONAL dead, even though a script is complete?

Apparently, not everyone is interested in seeing a sequel to Luc Besson’s beloved film, THE PROFESSIONAL.

According to an interview with Screen Rant, director Olivier Megaton talked about his upcoming film, COLOMBIANA, and the filmmaker thinks that this film may very well be the closest thing that we ever get to a sequel to the legendary film.

There is a screenplay complete for a sequel, entitled MATHILDA, and everyone, including actress Natalie Portman, still wants to actually make the hotly talked-about project, but the director revealed that the studio that currently controls the rights to the story isn't too keen on making it. That said, COLOMBIANA follows a woman, played by Zoe Saldana, who seeks revenge for the murder of her parents, and basically sounds like a relative of the seemingly dead sequel.

Personally, while I don’t think THE PROFESSIONAL is the greatest film ever, I do genuinely dig the hell out of it, and would love to see what else could be done within that world. This is definitely a sad piece of news, and apparently will only get sadder, as it doesn’t look like this will change any time soon.
