Is Brad Bird a candidate to direct MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 4?
No, Brad Bird is not a candidate to take over for Jacob (a little “Lost” humor for my fellow geeks), but according to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog, he is seriously being considered to direct Tom Cruise in MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 4. The film would mark Bird’s first ever live-action film, after years of making brilliant animated movies like THE IRON GIANT and THE INCREDIBLES.
Also in the running are Ruben Fleischer (ZOMBIELAND) and Edgar Wright (SCOTT PILGRIM VS THE WORLD), who are great choices, but I’m placing all my money on Brad Bird for this one. Let’s face it, the guy deserves it.
For a few years now he’s been trying to get his project 1906 (the movie he intended to be his first live-action film) off the ground, but it has stalled due to its inflated budget. It goes to show how little Hollywood thinks of animation. THE INCREDIBLES made over $600 million worldwide. That’s huge! If it wasn’t a cartoon and it made that much money, studios would be bending over backwards to give him money to start his next project.
MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 4 is scheduled to be released on May 27, 2011, so a director has to be picked soon. If Brad gets the job, I’m thinking he’ll finally prove to Hollywood what all of us already know. Then maybe he’ll finally get to make 1906 and whatever other projects he wants.
