Ivan Reitman sheds new light on GHOSTBUSTERS 3

Before we go into this little update on the movie we all want to see, it should be noted that Ivan Reitman actually directs other movies, and one of them, entitled NO STRINGS ATTACHED, hits theaters on January 21st and stars Natalie Portman and…Ashton Kutcher. But wait! It also features Cary Elwes (THE PRINCESS BRIDE, SAW), Kevin Kline (A FISH CALLED WANDA, THE ANNIVERSARY PARTY), and the lovely Greta Gerwig (BAGHEAD, GREENBERG) in co-starring roles.

With such a great cast, it’s obvious that the Hollywood elite are still falling over each other to get to work with Reitman, who still has an incredible comedy track record, regardless of a few missteps as of late (cough…MY SUPER X-GIRLFRIEND…bleh). The cast for GHOSTBUSTERS 3 (once it gets made of course) will undoubtedly have a spectacular cast in place to ensure that it’s at least watchable.

Remember, it’s been 21 years since the last Ghostbusters film -  a piece of fun popcorn entertainment that jumped the shark during the absurd Statue of Liberty finale – and although last years ghost-fighting video game was well received, there’s still a lot of speculation about the trilogy capper and if it will redeem the series. Ivan Reitman, who directed the first two films, told ComingSoon.net earlier today, “There is almost nothing that is accurate online about [GHOSTBUSTERS 3].” What about the casting rumors that Anna Farris and Bill Hader might be joining the team? Not true. Okay, what about the plot centering around Venkman’s son taking over the ghost-zapping business? Not likely. So, there’s no way that Bill Murray will actually be coming back in the form of a guiding spirit? Well, Reitman didn’t exactly deny that one…

When Reitman was asked point blank about Sigourney Weaver, Venkman’s son playing a crucial role, and a ghostly Bill Murray, the director denied and side-stepped.

“Oh, no, yeah… I mean, Sigourney Weaver has a role in this movie. All the original characters have parts. As well as a whole bunch of new characters… it’s got a really good story, this one. Maybe the best of the whole series. I hope we get to do it.”

So, what is the real status of this film up to this point? Reitman had this to say:

We have a really good script, but Bill (Murray) has to read it. He hasn’t read it. There has been all kinds of chatter online about him reading it and not liking it. He has not read a thing. He’s never read anything. And I just sent it to him. So we’ll see. God knows how long that will take. But we’ll see.

If everyone gets on board along with some top comedy talent from this generation and the story is as good as Reitman says, a 21st century update of the original with today’s computer technology could be something special. We would never cross the streams but we’re definitely crossing our fingers.
