Most of us (if you still subscribe to HBO) know J.B. Smoove from his over-the-top character in Curb Your Enthusiasm over the last couple of seasons, but my favorite appearance has to be Smoove making fun of hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons using a stair master on Oxygen’s Running Russell Simmons. It’s his role on Curb, however, that is catapulting him forward into the Hollywood elite and Smoove could very well be a household name soon, even if you’d rather not have him actually stay at your house.

Not only has the comedian recently landed roles in the Farrelly Brothers new film HALL PASS and David Gordon Green’s THE SITTER starring opposite Sam Rockwell, but he also has a sitcom in the works and has just been added to the stellar cast of Cameron Crowe’s WE BOUGHT A ZOO. Based on the best-seller by Benjamin Mee, ZOO will center around the true story of a family who gains control of a broken down zoo and the 200 animals that inhabit it. It’s not yet known what part Smoove will play, but we’re betting it’s one of the hired hands who helps bring the park back to prominence in hilarious and poignant fashion.

Smoove’s sitcom, produced by Shawn Levy of NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM fame (don’t hold that against him), will tell the tale of a recently divorced man so broke that he is forced to move into the basement of his ex-wife who has custody of their kids.

Producer Shawn Levy had this to say about the show:

“He’s trying to get his life back, and has noble aims, but has a talent for consistently tripping himself up. There’s shades of ‘Roseanne’ in its blue collar subject matter. It felt like a good comedy vehicle for J.B. and an idea suited for our moment.”

So, expect to see a lot more of Smoove in the months to come.
