Jake Gyllenhaal to star in cop drama END OF WATCH
Jake Gyllenhaal is set to star in David Ayer’s next “gritty” cop drama, END OF WATCH.
Ayer has been waist-deep in the cop genre for a decade, after penning the script to the terribly overrated Denzel Washington vehicle TRAINING DAY. He wrote DARK BLUE a year later and then made his directorial debut with HARSH TIMES, followed by STREET KINGS. While not many details are known, his new film END OF WATCH is being described as a gritty cop drama about two longtime partners.
They say that if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. I think that the "gritty" cop drama is broken. The genre is overpopulated with clichés (police corruption! undercover officer becomes addicted to drugs!), underwritten characters, and recycled plots making them indistinguishable from one another (I literally just found out today that STREET KINGS and BROOKLYN’S FINEST are different movies).
I hope that END OF WATCH brings something new to the table, but I will not be holding my breath.
