James Franco picks up rights to Sal Mineo biopic; will possibly write and direct
While he’s already won both awards and acclaim for his 2001 take on the legend James Dean (he won a Golden Globe for his role as Dean in JAMES DEAN), it looks like the always-busy James Franco is set to return to that very world.
According to THR, Franco has nabbed the rights to a biography of Sal Mineo, an actor who starred alongside Dean in the 1955 classic, REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE. Mineo was ultimately nominated for Best Supporting Actor for the film, before being murdered when he was 37.
Franco has lined up the project as a possible writing and directing job. Based on the Michael Gregg Michaud book, Sal Mineo: A Biography, the book joins Stephen Elliot’s memoir, The Adderall Diaries, as pieces that the young Renaissance man has optioned.
As with any new film attached to the young thespian, I can’t wait to see what he can do with it. Franco is a proven actor, and one that given the talent he’s worked with previously, should prove to be one hell of a filmmaker himself.
