If there is one celebrity in history that is long overdue for the cinematic biopic treatment, it’s “Broadway” Joe Namath.

Now, a biopic on the legendary NFL quarterback has been long gestating within Hollywood, and even got so far as to attach Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead role.  However, nothing has really moved on the project, and it has been kicked to the proverbial curb.

Or so it seemed.

According to Pajiba, James Mangold (3:10 TO YUMA, WALK THE LINE) is looking to take over the project, which is currently waiting in the wings at Universal. If the studio moves on this, it will not only mark an interesting project for Mangold, but in a world where they bail on the adult thriller CARTEL, and pass on films like Paul Thomas Anderson’s Scientology project, it will hopefully mark a return to the adult drama for the studio.

Gyllenhaal is indeed still attached to the project, and with shooting on SOURCE CODE finishing up, it looks as though this project may indeed be getting the wheels turning.  Namath’s life is one hell of an interesting one, and to me, is perfect fodder for a biopic, and with Mangold at the helm, I can’t help but be inherently interested.
