Jamie Campbell Bower lands male lead in THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS

With the recent news saturation by THE HUNGER GAMES and their ongoing casting announcements, another Young Adult series that's soon to hit the screen has been more than a bit overshadowed. But with today's announcement of its male lead, don't expect author Cassandra Clare's The Mortal Instruments series to be overlooked much longer.

Screen Gems has picked Jamie Campbell Bower as the male lead in the first film adaptation of the series, THE MORTAL INSTRUMENTS, to be directed by Scott Charles Stewart (PRIEST, LEGION). The film has long had Lily Collins attached as its female lead, with the male role of Jace Wayland proven to be a popular possibility for many of the young, handsome actors breaking out (Alex Pettyfer was, of course, one time rumored for the role).

Clare's series currently consists of four books, with at least three more promised. It follows Clary Fray (to be played by Collins) and her discovery and subsequent adjusting to and use of her powers as a "Shadowhunter." The books call upon a number of different types of the supernatural (vampires, angels, runes) but, in the shortest terms possible, a Shadowhunter is a human suffused with the ability to see and hunt demons. With the addition of a love triangle between Clary, Jace, and another character named Simon, the series is best described as a cross between THE TWILIGHT SAGA, HARRY POTTER, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Basically, it's what the kids want these days.

Bower has a great history in planning roles in popular YA books brought to screen - he's played Caius in the THE TWILIGHT SAGA films since the second in the series, NEW MOON, and has also appeared as Gellert Grindelwald in both of the HARRY POTTER AND THE DEATHLY HALLOWS films. But Bower has also appeared in such films as the upcoming ANONYMOUS, ROCKNROLLA, and the recently released stateside WINTER IN WARTIME. Bower is, however, most recognizable for his work on Camelot.

Though I have yet to read The Mortal Instruments series, the series sounds somewhat intriguing and Bower's resume appears to have placed him in a film that suits all his previous work quite well.

Fans of the books, does Bower suit your fancy for Jace?

He was one of the worst picks they could have made for Jace. He doesn’t come close to what I, or anybody, had pictured. For now, I am completely disappointed and let down about the movies. Who knows, I might see it and will be proven wrong. But I really doubt it. I’m so upset about this I can’t even describe it. Atleast I have the books…
