It’s been a while coming, but finally, we now have a lead for what appears to be one of the biggest franchises waiting in the wings.

Deadline has revealed that Javier Bardem is finalizing a deal that would find the actor in the lead role of the upcoming, multi-format franchise, THE DARK TOWER.

Based on a 7-novel series penned by Stephen King, the project will feature three films, which will see a season of a new TV show in-between each film. The story follows Roland Deschain, the “last living member of a knightly order of gunslingers,” who “becomes humanity’s last hope to save civilization as he hits the road to find the Dark Tower. Along the way, he encounters characters, good and bad, in a world that has an old West feel.”

The feature, and part of the TV portions, will be directed by Ron Howard with a script from Akiva Goldsman. Backed by Universal, this is, for all intents and purposes, one of the bigger undertakings for a single franchise in quite some time.

Personally, I think Bardem is a perfect fit. I’ve only seen the character in photos, as I have not read any of the novels, but I do feel as though he could do wonders within a role like this. As mentioned above, this is going to be one hell of an undertaking for Universal, so expect quite a bit of news to come out of here in the coming months.
