Jennifer Lawrence, who recieved an Academy Award nomination for her performance in the remarkable WINTER'S BONE, has landed the coveted lead role in THE HUNGER GAMES, The Wrap has confirmed.

Lawrence triumphed over fellow actresses Chloe Moretz (LET ME IN), Emily Browning (SUCKER PUNCH), Hailee Steinfeld (TRUE GRIT), and Emma Roberts (SCREAM 4) for the chance to play Katniss Everdeen in the Lionsgate production.

THE HUNGER GAMES, adapted from Suzanne Collins' acclaimed dark fantasy novel, centers on a young girl who joins a survival contest in order to save her community. Gary Ross (SEABISCUIT) is attached to direct from an adapted screenplay penned by Billy Ray (FLIGHTPLAN).

Alex Pettyfer (I AM NUMBER FOUR), Hunter Parrish (17 AGAIN), and Josh Hutcherson (THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT) are rumoured to be the three frontrunners to star opposite Lawrence as Peeta Mellark, Katniss' love interest.

Lawrence, who has seen her career explode since starring in THE BURNING PLAIN, can be seen next in X-MEN: FIRST CLASS and THE BEAVER, both of which are due to hit screens over the lucrative summer period.

I read the Hunger Games trilogy last year. Fun read. As for the casting…

We all know she’s got the acting chops, but after the Oscars I’m not sure she looks the part. The woman on the red carpet was just that, a full figured woman. Katniss was always, IMO, a girl still growing into being a woman. All in all, glad they casted a good actress.
