While those who love the legendary Disney cartoon may be jarred after reading this headline, but hey, give it a shot.

According to Deadline, Working Title (the group behind films like PRIDE AND PREJUDICE) is currently setting up a remake of the Disney animated film, THE LITTLE MERMAID, which itself is based off of a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale.  However, that’s not where the news stops.

The outlet also reports that the film will be spearheaded by one Joe Wright, director of THE SOLOIST and ATONEMENT, as well as the upcoming HANNA. Apparently, he saw a stage production set at The Little Angel Theater Company, which was founded by his father, and it became the inspiration needed for this project.

The film is being written by BRICK LANE writer Abi Morgan, and while I’m not a massive fan of the idea, if there is one visual eye that I think could kill this material, it’s Wright. I have loved all of what I’ve seen from Wright, outside of THE SOLOIST, and his distinct visual eye would fit perfectly into this story. I adore this news, and while I do love me some original Disney fare, the film can always use a new adaptation, particularly one from a director so perfectly matched with it.
