If you enjoyed RANGO or seeing Johnny Depp portray the maverick, drug-fueled genius of Hunter S. Thompson in FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS, you're now going to have the opportunity to see the superstar in the film adaptation of Thompson's early novel The Rum Diary.

FilmDistrict picked up the film back in September, and THE RUM DIARY now has a release date set for October 28. The film follows Depp - a jaded New York journalist tired of the big city - who ventures down to Puerto Rico to write for a small newspaper. The story is loosely based on Thompson's own trip down to San Juan from New York City in 1960, where he eventually began writing for a struggling sports newspaper on the island.

Depp plays Paul Kemp, who eventually gets caught up in an alcohol-driven tailspin leading to a tangled web of love, lust, and danger...oh my. Amber Heard and Aaron Eckhart co-star in THE RUM DIARY as well, with Bruce Robinson directing his own adaptation of the novel.

Too bad Hunter won't be around to see it when THE RUM DIARY hits theaters just before Halloween.
