Jon Chu directing G.I. JOE 2
Yes, because when I think G.I. Joe, I think Justin Bieber.
That’s apparently what Paramount is thinking, as Deadline has revealed that JUSTIN BIEBER: NEVER SAY NEVER director Jon Chu has been tapped to direct the upcoming film, G.I. JOE 2.
Chu, best known for STEP UP 2 and 3, beat out directors like F. Gary Gray and Jaume Collet-Serra and will be directing the sequel to the high grossing, but critically panned, G.I. JOE film. Channing Tatum is the next person being looked at to sign up according to the report, as his return appears to be the studio’s biggest focus at this point.
Personally, while I’m not a huge fan of what I’ve seen from Chu (and for all intents and purposes, NEVER SAY NEVER has been getting solid reviews since its debut earlier this month), this isn’t a shocking move. Chu is a really hot commodity at this point, so it’s solid business for a studio seemingly looking to make this one on the cheap. That said, his addition really takes out a lot of the intrigue in this project for me. It’s a weird choice, and one that I just don’t think fits.
What do you think?
