Apparently, despite his continual interest in helming the long-talked about reboot of the ROBOCOP franchise, director Darren Aronofksy has lost the project.

According to Deadline, MGM is currently set to hire Brazilian filmmaker Jose Padihla (ELITE SQUAD) to helm the long gestating film. The report reveals that this is looking to be the studio’s first major franchise film, with the studio being impresed by the Brazilian filmmaker and his canon, including ELITE SQUAD, ELITE SQUAD 2, and the documentary BUS 174.

Padilha may be a new name to most, but he is a well-beloved filmmaker in cinephile circles, particularly after being the recipient of the Golden Bear award in 2007 for ELITE SQUAD from the year’s Berlinale.

Personally, while I’m not familiar with Padihla’s work, he is definitely an interesting name to attach to a project like this. This news definitely makes this project sound a lot more interesting, and while he may not be an Aronofsky level auteur, a seemingly random choice like this does really make the film a bit more intriguing.
