Judd Apatow is a brilliant comic (I am sure you don’t need me to tell you that by now, everyone already knows). I think he might be the only guy who would have the gall for casting Marshall Mathers (Eminem, Slim Shady, whitey with the mic whose words come out really fast and sometimes in a funny voice/accent, etc.) in a comedic film. Here is what Judd Apatow has to say about that, “kick-ass STAR TREK”, explicit word count in FUNNY PEOPLE, and Adam Sandler having sex with his wife. That’s right, you just might want to read on:

Will I like FUNNY PEOPLE more than any other movie I see this summer including the kick ass Star Trek?

“You definitely will. You will like it way more than every movie that comes out this summer, and it will be a tie with STAR TREK.”

What is the movie about?

“It is about a world famous comedian who gets sick, then gets better and doesn’t know what to do with this second chance. It is also about his friendship with a young comedian, and his attempt to win back his old flame who is currently married and has two kids. And it is about fifty other things too. Just see it. I will ruin it if I try to explain it.”

Is it a comedy or a drama?

“It is a comedy. I think it is as funny as THE FORTY YEAR OLD VIRGIN and KNOCKED UP. It is more emotional than my other two films, but if you hate emotions you will still like it. And most people do hate emotions.”

How many times should I see “Funny People”?

“Three. Once for the laughs. The second time to notice the details you missed when you laughed. And the third time just to make sure we beat TRANSFORMERS at the box office. We must not let robots rule the world.”

Is it long?

“Depends on your attention span. It is two minutes shorter than TRANSFORMERS 2, but the extra fifteen minutes is free! No extra charge! Did I mention we do not have any robots? Is that a bad thing?”

Who is in it?

“Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen, Leslie Mann, Eric Bna, Jonah Hill, Jason Schwartzman, Aziz Ansari, Aubrey Plaza, Rza.”

Is Eminem in it?

“No. Marshall Mathers is in it.”

How did that happen?

“I still don’t know.”

How was it directing him?

“I was scared to pitch jokes to him then I realized his songs are as nasty as anything that has ever been spoken. There is no way to offend him.”

Did you used to live with Adam Sandler?

“I did. When we were in our early twenties we lived in North Hollywood together. We both were doing stand up comedy at the time. It was before he was on SNL. It was clear back then that he would be a star and that I would be a guy who knew a big star. I lacked a key ingredient, charisma. And maybe talent. And possibly stage presence and definitely sex appeal.”

How do you and Seth Rogen get along these days? Have things changed?

“No. We only have one rift. I don’t know why he did not ask me to play the naked flasher in OBSERVE AND REPORT. That was the part I was born to play.”

How did Eric Bana fit into your group?

“It is always great when a handsome, sexy, world famous movie star has to hang out with a bunch of nerds because then he feels like the outsider. So we used that against him to dominate him. If I have to hang out with ten handsome world class superstars I would feel like an outsider, but that is why I never do that.”

Why do you have two stars of PARKS AND RECREATION in your film (Aziz Ansari and Aubrey Plaza)?

“I am getting a kick back from NBC for this cross promotion. Some call it synergy. I call it an extra two hundred bucks in my wallet per week.”

Is there a lot of cursing in this film?

“Well, if there was a drinking game where one had to drink every time a character cursed then the player of that game would be dead in ten minutes. Seriously. Don’t play that game.”

What is it like working with your wife, the gorgeous and hilarious Leslie Mann?

“It is always fun. She is very committed to her craft. In order to prepare to perform a sex scene with Adam Sandler she had sex with him daily for two weeks before we shot the scene and for three months afterwards.”

Why do you put your children in your films?

“Six words—I get to keep the money. And also, if I hire them I don’t have to meet anyone else’s weird kids.”

Eric Bana used to be a comedian. So it isn't much of a surprise to see him in this, actually.
