Julia Stiles to produce and star in adaption of THE BELL JAR
There was a time when Julia Stiles was a Hollywood it girl. In the late '90s and early 2000s, I can recall many a friend being impressed by her dancing skills if not her acting. But in recent years, there has been a defecit of Stiles on the screen. Sure she's been in all those Jason Bourne movies, but that's not the Julia I remember.
Well, it appears that Stiles has been keeping occupied and I for one am glad to hear it. She has found time to graduate from Columbia University as well as appearing on Broadway. Recently it was announced that Stiles had landed a role on the next season of the hit television show Dexter. Today also comes the news that Stiles is planning to produce and star in an adaptation of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar.
I sometimes have a hard time dealing with adaptations of novels, and as this is one of my favorites but I'm not sure how I feel about this at the current moment. But, it appears to be a passion project for Stiles as well, so I can only hope that this turns out well. The Bell Jar is the semi-autobiographical novel that parallels the author's own struggle with mental illness. Stiles would play Esther Greenwood and Virginia Madsen has signed on to play Dr. Nolan.
The film is being written by playwright Tristine Skyler and will be directed by Nicole Kassell (THE WOODSMAN). I am already impressed by the number of women involved in getting this film to the screen. This film has great potential to be an award winner and feminist movie like THE HOURS.
