Julie Taymor’s THE TEMPEST to close the Venice Film Festival
Finally, something other than Comic Con news to talk about.
According to Indie Wire, Julie Taymor’s long-awaited return to the big screen, THE TEMPEST, will be closing the upcoming Venice Film Festival. This news come about a week after the announcement that Darren Aronofsky’s latest film, BLACK SWAN, will be the opener of the festival.
The film is Taymor’s female-centric take on the famous William Shakespeare play of the same name, and follows a woman scorned, Prospera, who must seek revenge on the brother of her recently passed husband to reclaim her title. Helen Mirren is the film’s lead, and is joined by Chris Cooper, Felicity Jones, David Strathairn, Djimon Hounsou, Alfred Molina, Russell Brand, and Ben Whishaw.
Personally, while this isn’t a huge news story, this is great news if you are a fan of Taymor, like yours truly just so happens to be. While I liked (but didn’t love) ACROSS THE UNIVERSE, films like FRIDA and TITUS have proven that there is not a single filmmaker with a similar visual eye like Taymor, making the filmmaker a really interesting one to watch.
Here’s to hoping that Terrence Malick’s TREE OF LIFE, a film that still has yet to be announced for any film festival, follows suit and makes an announcement soon.
