Kasi Lemmons to helm ON BEAUTY

March 28th, 2012

There are very few directing voices in the film world as original and singular as Kasi Lemmons.  Director of such films as EVE’S BAYOU and the wonderful TALK TO HER, she has not only become one of the most interesting female directors working today, but one of the most interesting filmmakers, regardless of gender.  And now she is set to helm a hugely beloved novel as her next project.

Deadline is reporting that Lemmons is set to helm ON BEAUTY, based on the novel from UK scribe Zadie Smith.  The story follows two parents, one a British intellectual and the other a conservative man from Trinidad, both of whom live in Boston and come together after their children spark a relationship.

Personally, while I’m not hugely familiar with the book or Smith’s rather adored work, I do know that Lemmons is one hell of a director, and should take to this piece rather swimmingly.  She has a great aesthetic, and one that fits this type of intimate narrative perfectly.  Here’s to hoping that when the cast is formed, we’ll be looking at one hell of a project, because that’s what it sounds like at this point.
