UPDATE: About 30 minutes ago, MTV reported that the NY Times states that The Hollywood Reporter's story is false:

"This report is inaccurate. There is no movie deal...There is no deal and no one is attached to the project."

Original Post:

There were varying reports both today and yesterday claiming that HURT LOCKER director Kathryn Bigelow had signed on to direct HELD BY THE TALIBAN, based on the five-part series chronicling New York Times investigative journalist David Rohde's experience when he was held captive by the Taliban for seven months before escaping.

According to The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Business Blog, Terrence Malick (writer/director for the upcoming release, THE TREE OF LIFE) has expressed interest to "produce the film and he has his own pitch on the material."

The package that went out to the studios has Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall attached to produce. The series will be adapted by Stephen Belber, writer/director of the comedic film MANAGEMENT.

At this point, Bigelow has expressed interest in the project, but she is not confirmed to direct. The prospect of a Bigelow-directed film produced by Terrence Malick is one that is very appealing. The final decision should be made by Monday.
