Coming into the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, very few films had the hype that director Kevin Smith’s latest film, the horror picture RED STATE, drew prior to its debut.

With the director himself becoming quite a lightning rod, speaking out against critics (again) and even Bruce Willis, we now know when we will be able to see the actual film, and while he seemed to have all the intentions of setting up quite an interesting “auction” for the film following its premiere, he did something wholly different.

During what was supposed to be the film’s “auction” (pitting studios against each other to bid for the rights following the debut), Smith revealed that he himself will distribute the film, through his newly announced shingle, Smodcast Productions. Set to bow on October 19, the film will also begin being shown in a road show format, with a debut at Radio City Music Hall on March 5.  Tickets to the road show will allegedly cost 6-7 times the normal cost of tickets, but again, the people seeing the film during the road show exhibition will not only see the film first, but likely get an extensive Kevin Smith Q&A to follow.

Now, first this is really interesting. Say what you will about the guy, but if this proves to work, he may have just changed the way films are distributed for a long time. That all said, the road show format is nothing new, so it remains to be seen just what type of change this could instill.

That said, we will have much more on this as it comes.
