Kevin Spacey plays Jack Abramoff in new clip for CASINO JACK
Biopics can be tricky things. First off, they can be tough to define. Can we call it a biopic if the film only spans the course of someone's life? What if it simply covers a few events in someone's life? Second, they can turn out to be something pretty phenomenal, like THE AVIATOR or I'M NOT THERE. On the other hand, look at NOTORIOUS. Or AMELIA.
Hopefully we're looking at something quite different with CASINO JACK, a narrative look at the life of super-lobbyist Jack Abramoff. If this clip is any indication, we're in for something pretty interesting. Check out the video after the break.
Kevin Spacey is easily one of the best actors currently working, and it shows in the clip. After all, the clip consists of an extended monologue which showcases his immense talents. I was pretty skeptical when I heard that Spacey would be playing Abramoff. The resemblance isn't really there, but that small fact is drowned out when you see how well Spacey pulls off the enigma that is Jack Abramoff.
I just saw CASINO JACK AND THE UNITED STATES OF MONEY a few months back, which was a purely documentary look at the guy's life. Jack Abramoff isn't just a character; he's a pariah. He's not just a lobbyist. He's something substantially more. He encapsulates the emotions, ideologies, and issues facing Washington. This is a guy that made billion dollar deals on a daily basis; this is a guy that got Tom DeLay, one of our country's biggest power players, out of Washington.
As a note, I'm not sure what the title of this movie is. It was reported a while back that the name had been changed from CASINO JACK to BAGMAN. However, this clip is still titled as CASINO JACK on the Epoch Films website. So, who knows? If you do, drop a comment or shoot us an email!
