Despite getting seemingly diminishing returns from her sophomore effort, STOP-LOSS, Kimberly Peirce (BOYS DON’T CRY) is very much one of the most interesting filmmakers, male or female, around.

Well, thankfully the filmmaker has found a brand new project, and it’s one hell of an interesting one.

Deadline has revealed that she will direct the upcoming film, THE KNIFE, for Universal. The film is inspired by the “true story of a South Central gang member who became a paid FBI informant. His covert collaboration with a hard-nosed agent led to a volume of busts ranging from crack and automatic weapons dealing to murder. It turned the gang scene so upside down that leaders issued a ‘kill all snitches’ edict that put the informant’s life in constant danger.”

The film is being penned by Vineet Dewan, with Brian Grazer producing.

Personally, I couldn’t be more in love with this news. Despite the lack of quality that was STOP-LOSS, Peirce is still one of the most interesting filmmakers around, and this seems to be a project that could both hone in on what makes her a great filmmaker, and also push her to something wholly different than anything previously in her canon.
