Kodi Smit-McPhee negotiating for role in ROMEO AND JULIET
William Shakespeare’s tragic romance Romeo and Juliet has been adapted for the silver screen time and time again, the two most famous incarnations coming from Franco Zeffirelli in 1968 and Baz Luhrmann in 1996. Now FLUKE director Carlo Carlei is attached to helm another adaptation of the classic story, with GOSFORD PARK scribe Julian Fellowes on board for screenwriting duties.
Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld will play Juliet, and while we don’t have a Romeo just yet, we do have a new addition to the cast. Variety reports that Kodi Smit-McPhee is negotiating to play Romeo’s cousin Benvolio in the upcoming Shakespeare adaptation. Benvolio attempts to stop the feuding between Mercutio and Tybalt, the latter of whom will be played by Ed Westwick from TV’s Gossip Girl. Oscar winner Holly Hunter has signed on to play Juliet’s Nurse.
It’s interesting to see that Carlei is attaching younger actors to the significant roles, as such casting fits in with the supposed ages of the main characters in the original stage play. It’s also somewhat reminiscent of the Zeffirelli adaptation, which picked up an Oscar nomination for Best Picture.
Personally, I can’t wait to see the future of this project’s casting; it’ll be especially interesting to see who’ll star opposite Steinfeld as Romeo.
