Land, ho! New TREASURE ISLAND film in the works
With his recent success in transforming SHERLOCK HOLMES into an action packed blockbuster, producer Lionel Wigram is working on updating yet another literary classic. Wigram, paired with Warner Bros. and his Wigram Productions, are currently developing a new version of Robert Louis Stevenson's timeless tale of pirates and buried treasure.
It is being reported that Warner Bros. already has a finished script from relative newcomer Michael Gilio. No definitive word on who may be attached to direct although Paul Greengrass' name has previously been thrown into the hat. An apparent lover of adding more explosions to classic literature, Wigram is also fast at work on his updated THREE MUSKETEERS film at Summit, with Paul W. S. Anderson directing.
Interestingly enough, we may see a race to the theater on this one as Ecosse, an English production company, is also currently working on their own version of an action-adventure centered TREASURE ISLAND with a script from Niall Johnson (WHITE NOISE). Something tells me that X will mark the spot on Wigram's version though, as I imagine when a smaller production company goes head to head with a major like Warner Bros., the bigger boat sinks the smaller one and sails away with the gold.
