Tobey Maguire has found a seasoned pro when it comes to writing his new sci-fi epic, Robotech, that is none other than Lawrence Kasdan.  Kasdan has been around for quite a while, and has written some of the best sci fi films of all time.  He wrote Raiders of the Lost Ark,not to mention The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.  Funnily enough, Kasdan got his big break writing the screenplay for The Bodyguard in the 70's for Diana Ross but it got stuck in development hell until it was made in the 90's with Whitney Houston.

Robotech was a popular Japanese anime that was re-edited and re-dubbed for the US using three different series. It takes place at a time when Earth has developed giant robots from the technology on an alien spacecraft that crashed on a South Pacific isle. Mankind is forced to use the technology to fend off three successive waves of alien invasions. The first invasion centers on a battle with a race of giant warriors who seek to retrieve their flagship's energy source known as "protoculture," and the planet's hope for survival ends up in the hands of two young pilots.

Tobey Maguire bought the film rights through his production company Maguire Entertainment and plans to produce as well star in the film.  Maguire said. "There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film...". The decision to fast track the project was said to have been made due to the enormous success of the Transformers film adaptation, which grossed $690 million dollars during the summer of 2007. With all the source material, I can not wait to see what epic film Kasdan comes up with.
