Sci-fi fans looking for a bit of crossover geekery should enjoy the latest news on voice casting for TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON. Over at Entertainment Weekly, they've got the exclusive news on the casting of Leonard Nimoy as Sentinel Prime, "the predecessor of Optimus Prime." The robot is already proving to be an important part of the third film in Michael Bay's trannie trifecta, as it is the body of Sentinel we see on the moon in the film's teaser trailer.

The addition of Nimoy to the cast strengthens Bay's attempts to bring a quality (well, more quality film) to audiences after the clusterbeep that was TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN. A big part of that is adding depth to the robots. Bay said, “The robots have more character in this movie. Much more. You really understand their struggle, on both sides actually." Sure, Michael, okay. As an admitted fan of the first film, I do look forward to a better entry in the franchise than whatever the heck REVENGE was supposed to be.

For a little spoiler about just how big a role Sentinel (and, conversely, Nimoy) will play in the film, hit the break. Buried in said spoiler is also an expanded tidbit on the climax of the film, so if you want to remain fresh for the film, steer clear.

Entertainment Weekly also reports that Sentinel Prime will be brought to Earth, later to take "the disguise form of a fire engine in the movie’s massive, climactic battle through Chicago." There you have it - Sentinel comes to Earth, and Michael Bay is going to blow the hell out of Chicago.

TRANSFORMERS: DARK OF THE MOON opens on July 1.

Bay originally wanted Nimoy to voice “The Fallen” in RotF, but admitted he was nervous just asking him to do it. If I recall Nimoy himself said he would have taken the job had it been offered.
