LIFE OF PI takes shape with Ang Lee and Suraj Sharma
The bestselling book Life of Pi is finally coming together as a film! Ang Lee has been sitting on this project for nearly a year, and has just decided on his leading man: unknown Suraj Sharma, who will play the sixteen year old Pi Patel. Sharma is a seventeen year old student from Delhi, India and has never acted before.
Ang Lee must have seen something to believe this film can revolve around him over the other 3,000 teenagers who auditioned. Take a look at Sharma, after the break!
Now with the lead in place, principal photography for LIFE OF PI is scheduled to begin in January. The entire film will be shot in Taiwan and India, in 3D. While 3D is already starting to lose its luster, shooting in 3D guarantees the best viewing in that medium.
The story follows Pi, who gets stranded for 227 days in shark-infested waters. He survives on a small 26-foot lifeboat with only a Bengal tiger, a wounded zebra, a spotted hyena, and a seasick orangutan as shipmates.
I, for one, loved the book but don't know how well it will translate to the screen. But if anyone could handle this unique tale, it's Ang Lee!
