Live-action DILBERT feature in the works; Ken Kwapis to direct?
Being a child of the digital age as I am, I rarely come into contact with a physical newspaper. So sadly, I’ve never actually read a Dilbert comic strip. That is not entirely true, I think I’ve seen a few at the bottom of an email. But there was one week in my life where I was somewhat addicted to the animated television series thanks to its availablility via Netflix Instant Viewing and Hulu. Anyone familiar with corporate office drudgery can relate to the life of Dilbert and I got caught up in the commiseration for a brief point in time.
Back in 1999, when the animated series was on UPN there was talk that a live-action DILBERT movie was in the works, but that never came to fruition. Then in 2007, Chris Columbus purchased the rights and was said to be attached to direct the film for Warner Bros. That project never saw the light of day either. But maybe three is the charm for a DILBERT live action movie.
According to Pajiba.com, Phoenix Entertainment is working on a live-action Dilbert film with Ken Kwapis attached to direct. Kwapis seems like a good choice for the project when you consider he has directed twelve episodes of NBC’s The Office. Pajiba also speculated that John Krasinski might be cast in the title role. This is not terribly unlikely due to Kwapis’ relationship with Krasinski who was recently cast in Kwapis’ EVERYBODY LOVES WHALES. Kwapis’ other films include LICENSE TO WED, HE’S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU, and THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS.
I’m not entirely sure how I feel about this project. I love a good satirical office comedy, but there are many bizarre elements of Dilbert that I can see being difficult to translate to film such as all the talking animals like Dogbert.
I’ve always thought Dilbert looked like Drew Carey. That would be perfect casting if they can peel him away from The Price Is Right.
