With the nationwide release of the SNL based film, MACGRUBER, the movie industry is ablaze with Macgyver fever right now. Well, I guess so. I mean, if Macgyver fever is the same as hiring a mediocre screenwriter to pen the screenplay for the big screen adaptation of your parodied to death '80s television show, then it sure is getting hot in here! Maybe that's just my cargo pants full of wires, toothpicks, and tape....

So, who's the lucky guy who gets to write MACGYVER?

Well, according to THR, Jason Richman has been hired to write the screenplay for the movie. Check out his list of qualifications, after the jump.

Jason Richman is the guy who is responsible for the script which provided the structure for the lowest point in Nic Cage's carrer- BANGKOK DANGEROUS. Not only was that movie one of the worst I'd seen that year, but his list of movies doesn't end there. Richman is also the screenwriter for films like the Kevin Costner high concept election comedy, SWING VOTE, and BAD COMPANY, the Anthony Hopkins/Chris Rock mashup directed by Joel Schumacher.

Ouch.

Talk about a series of unfortunate events. Not only that, but he's done script work on a few other films. Thanks to THR, we've got a little bit of insight into his other movies. Maybe this'll justify the choice?

Nope. The other films he's worked on range from RUSH HOUR 3 to BLACK HAWK DOWN. So, needless to say we won't expect the MACGYVER movie to have any substance or quality. However, I wasn't really expecting it. A few months ago, when the project was announced, I wasn't really expecting it to go in any different direction.

So, does the addition of this particular screenwriter instill any hope at all in you? Or are you in agreement with me? All I really know is that there won't be near enough mullets.
