With the 2011 Cannes Film Festival shaping up to be one of the biggest in years (with likely additions featuring names like Malick, von Trier, and Kar-Wai, just to name a few), one A-lister won’t be making the trip to the Croisette this year.

THR is reporting that Madonna, who will be screening her latest film W.E. for investors at the upcoming European Film Market, will not be bringing the period drama to the Cannes Film Festival. The film is expected to make the fall festival circuit however, with a likely premiere at Venice or Toronto later in the year.

The film stars Abbie Cornish and Oscar Isaac, and tells “parallel stories about the love affair between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII as well as one about a modern romance.” Personally, while I’m not the biggest fan of Madonna, not in the least actually, I do have a ton of hope for this film. I love the cast, and the premise does sound intriguing. Here’s to hoping it can live up to the hype.
