CONAN THE BARBARIAN may not be in theaters yet (though its ridiculous teaser trailer has been burning out my eyes in previews for months now), but director Marcus Nispel already has his next gig lined up.

Nispel will helm BACKMASK, a film "based on an idea by Nispel," with a script written by Kirsten Elms. Elms' resume is quite slim, with the screenwriter perhaps best known (?) for her 2006 television movie, BANSHEE, starring Taryn Manning. An original idea will be a departure for Nispel, who's lately made his bread and butter with remakes and reboots - from the upcoming CONAN to THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE (which I liked) and FRIDAY THE 13TH (which I barely felt anything for).

Nispel is keeping mum on details, but has said "that it involves paranoia, possession and the paranormal." So it's about...alliteration?

The film has a reported $10 million budget and will start lensing this summer.

Voltage Pictures will present the title at Cannes this week, as they are currently looking for international sales to be handled.
