With WikiLeaks to be named one of the many nominees for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, the controversial lightning rod known as Julian Assange  just got a really interesting name to produce a new biopic.

The Wrap is reporting that THE HURT LOCKER scribe Mark Boal and financier Megan Ellison have optioned an NY Times story about the man, with Annapurna Productions fully funding the project.

It remains to be seen if Boal will be writing the film, but he will at least be on as producer. This is one of a handful of films looking at WikiLeaks and its face; it joins an upcoming Alex Gibney documentary (which he will be producing) and the upcoming adaptation of the yet-to-be-released biography, The Most Dangerous Man In The World.

I think it goes without saying that this is a perfect project for Boal, and one that I hope he ultimately pens. Both of his upcoming Kathryn Bigelow films should be in the can by this time next year (hopefully anyways), so don’t be shocked if he does ultimately write it. Could Bigelow direct? Nothing of the sort has been announced, but then again, stranger things have happened.

More on this project as it comes.
