Mark Romanek might want Ben Stiller for THE VOICES
This past weekend a friend made me watch REALITY BITES for the first time and I walked away with a newfound respect for Ben Stiller, who directed and acted in the film. I've always loved the guy, but the fact that he could make such a good movie at such a young age just made me like him more. So when I read that Mark Romanek is considering him as his lead in THE VOICES, I was ecstatic.
The script for the film was written by Michael R. Perry and gained notoriety when it made last year's Black List, which compiles the best un-produced scripts in Hollywood. In the script, "Jerry, a schizophrenic worker at a bathtub factory, accidentally kills an attractive woman from accounting. While trying to cover his bloody tracks, Jerry starts taking advice from his talking (and foul-mouthed) cat and dog."
The film seems to walk a fine line between being funny and disturbing, as evident from a scene in which "Jerry has friendly conversations with his victim’s severed head," and an actor like Ben Stiller could easily balance those opposing forces.
And even if Stiller needed some coaching, Mark Romanek would be the perfect director for him. In 2002, he successfully turned funny-man Robin Williams into a scary creep in ONE HOUR PHOTO.
