Mark Ruffalo in final negotiations to play The Hulk in THE AVENGERS
The last few days have been chock full of casting news surrounding Marvel's THE AVENGERS. We've had the angry tirades surrounding Edward Norton not reprising his role and a rumor saying that Joaquin Phoenix might play Bruce Banner. Well, it looks like the last word has been spoken, as Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Mark Ruffalo is entering final negotiations to play The Hulk in THE AVENGERS.
Check out the full story after the jump.
Mark Ruffalo is currently riding a huge wave of success. He's had critical acclaim over the past few years for his performances in THE BROTHERS BLOOM, ZODIAC, SHUTTER ISLAND, and the recent indie success THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT. He has also started directing - including the Sundance pick SYMPATHY FOR DELICIOUS. This casting would certainly bring him into the eyes of the geek community, as THE AVENGERS is sure to be one of the bigger film events of the next few years.
Ruffalo would be replacing Edward Norton, who portrayed Bruce Banner in the last reboot of THE INCREDIBLE HULK in 2008. Rampant speculation as to whether or not he would return was finally put to rest last week when he departed the picture. Since then, we've had a rumor or two surface.
I'm pretty stoked to see Ruffalo take on the role, as he's a damn fine actor who has largely been confined to secondary roles. Hopefully, a part like this will lead to a leading role soon enough, as I think he's got the chops.
