Mark Wahlberg talks THE FIGHTER sequel
After garnering two Oscars, it goes without saying that THE FIGHTER was one of the year’s more beloved awards season darlings.
So it’s understandable as to why there would be talks about a possible sequel. However, producer and star Mark Wahlberg has even bigger plans for this apparently burgeoning franchise.
In speaking with Extra, the actor revealed that “Now we’re gonna talk about doing No. 2…We’re gonna do the Ward /Gatti trilogy and make it real.” For those who may not know, the main character of THE FIGHTER, Mickey Ward, had a massively talked about trilogy of battles with fellow fighter Gatti, all of which ultimately left both fighters physically and emotionally scarred, in more ways than one. These fights marked the end of Ward’s career, so they would actually serve as quite a capper to the first part of this story.
Personally, this is actually one film I’d love to see get a second edition. With the right people returning, this could be a really solid film. However, what I loved so much about the film is that it told this perfectly singular story that actually had a deep emotional core. This sequel could ultimately play like a much broader sports film, so feelings on this are definitely mixed.
