Scorsese helming film about Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor romance

The Nancy Schoenberger and Sam Kashner book Furious Love takes a look at the romance between Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor. Not only did the duo take the silver screen by storm with lauded performances in CLEOPATRA – where the two first met – and WHO’S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF?, they also had one of the Golden Age’s most scandalous love affairs.

Despite the book's steamy material, studios weren't interested in making it into a film. With the recent and untimely passing of Taylor, though, there was a renewed interest in the love affair between the two actors.

Deadline Hollywood relays that Paramount is currently negotiating for the film rights to Furious Love; Martin Scorsese is looking to direct the feature. Much like 2005’s WALK THE LINE, this will focus on the romance at the center of it all and won’t be much of a biopic.

To this day, Scorsese remains a fascinating director to follow; his most recent features include the thriller SHUTTER ISLAND, the documentary PUBLIC SPEAKING, and the upcoming 3D family flick HUGO CABRET. Seeing him tackle a serious relationship drama based on real-life occurrences would be a nice change of pace for Scorsese, and it’ll definitely be interesting to watch as the casting for the iconic Hollywood couple unfolds.
