Marvel’s Kevin Feige talks Edgar Wright’s ANT-MAN
Once upon a time, Edgar Wright (SHAUN OF THE DEAD, HOT FUZZ) was attached to direct a big screen version of the Marvel property Ant-Man. Well, according to Marvel Studio's President of Production Kevin Feige it is still on fire like gasoline on an ant hill...eventually.
Check out what Mr. Feige had to say on the topic after the jump!
"Edgar was in LA last week, we sat down, and we started working on a calendar of when to get him back into it once he finishes promoting Scott Pilgrim, so I think towards the end of this year, early next year we'd start looking at early prep for that, but certainly for a release date after The Avengers."
THE AVENGERS is slated for a May 4, 2012 release so it looks like we may be waiting awhile to see Wright's vision of the great shrinking man who can control ants with his superpowered helmet. But at least it sounds as if it is still happening!
As Feige noted, they are looking to release ANT-MAN after THE AVENGERS, so there's really no telling if Wright's film will be a complete origin story or how it will interconnect in terms of when it occurs in the Marvel cinematic universe. It has been previously reported that the story will involve both Henry Pym and Scott Lang, two men who took up the Ant-Man mantle during different generations. Pym initially invented the technology enabling him to be Ant-Man, as well as other aliases which were based on varying sizes such as Giant-Man, Goliath, Yellowjacket, and Wasp. With the help of Pym and Iron Man, Lang was a thief turned hero who assumed the identity of Ant-Man and later became a member of The Avengers. Joe Cornish's script is said to feature Pym as Ant-Man in the 1960s flashing forward to Lang as his successor in modern times.
As Feige also noted, Wright is of course full steam ahead right now promoting SCOTT PILGRIM VS. THE WORLD, a comic book adaptation in itself, which hits theaters on August 13. He also has THE WORLD'S END, his next film with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost; and Mike White's THEM on the docket so it is a possibility he may tackle one of those before ANT-MAN.
